40th Anniversary Cake

Scripture to Live By:

"I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said,"It is more blessed to give than to receive."
Acts 20:35

The Apostle Paul was one whose example was worthy to follow. He sought to follow the Lord in daily living his life to honor and please his Lord in all he did and said.  What an example of how Jesus wants us to live our lives.

These last three weeks have been very busy for me. Week before last, I helped out with Vacation Bible School.

Those doing the decorations did an incredible job.

I worked with the Kindergarteners. This is a wall in our room.
The children were so sweet and  inquisitive.  I really enjoyed them.
The children enjoyed trying to dunk a man in the tank.  They got two tries to hit the "X", each time they  tried.  If they hit the "X" hard enough it would release the seat the man sat on and  he would go down into the tank.  They really gave it their best throws.

They also enjoyed riding the zip line.

The children heard and memorized God's Word as well.

The theme for their project, this year, was "Children helping Children".  The children gave an offering to children in an orphanage in another country.  The offering totaled  $2000.00 for the week.  That was a great amount for children who averaged around a hundred nightly.
Some gracious adults helped in it as well.

Last week, my husband and I helped  in our churches Day Junior Camp at a very nice 4-H camp.

The children had a great week.

I taught the first and second graders on Monday  and helped with crafts all week.
One of the features was an area motorcyclist who preformed for the children and gave his testimony of how God had worked in his life.

The week was a real blessing to all the children, as well as the staff.

Cake Decorating Post:
I, also, made a 40th Wedding Anniversay Cake for a couple in our church, this same week.  The couple knew nothing about this planned celebration in their honor.  That is until, I was setting up the cake at the church on Sunday morning.   The husband, of this couple, showed up at the church around 7:00 am.  I could not believe he was standing there, looking at the cake, when it was to be a surprise to him and his wife. This Sunday was the churches "Home Coming" celebration as well.

He saw the "40" on the cake and he knew the cake was for something different than the churches homecoming, since the church had been in existance for over 100 years. The colors on the cake were his wedding colors and he was going to be married 40 years soon.
He knew the cake was for his anniversary celebration.

This was not a small cake. It served a hundred and fifty people or more.

Here is how I made it.   I baked two 16 inch layers, two 12 inch layers and two 8 inch layers.  A total of nine cake mixes, 27 eggs and 3 cups of oil.

(To see the process of baking a cake go here)

Frosted between each layer. Then frost the outside of each cake and began the process of decorating the cakes.

After I got each cake frosted and decorated with white frosting, I began making the pink and red roses to go on the cake.  The frosting I make is buttercream and it never gets hard, so I put the flowers in the freezer and add them to the cake from the freezer one at a time frozen.

I put  8 wooden posts in the 18 inch layer, to support the sencond layer, which is 12 inches in diameter cake.  In the 12 inch layer I put 5 wooden posts to support the 8 inch layer, that goes on top of it.

I added a 9 inch plate on top of the 12 inch cake to support the flowers and the divider posts before adding the top layer.

This completes this 40 Anniversary Cake.

I hope the couple liked their cake and enjoyed their special day,
of celebrating their 40 years of marriage.

I am not a professional cake decorator.  I just enjoy making cakes to bless others.
I have made wedding cakes for all our children and most of our church families children and several others.   My cake decorating  started with  making and decorating cakes for my children as they grew up.  I am thankful I have been able to help others  and bless them by making cakes for them.

Fencing & Growth of our Raised Gardens

Scripture to Live By:
1 Peter 2:2
“As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:”

2 Peter 3:18
But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.”

Colossians 1:10
“That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God.”

Philippians 1:6
“Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Jesus Christ.” (ASV)

God expects growth in His children just as we expect growth in our garden.  God tells us how we can grow in our spiritual lives.  He says, "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." 2 Timothy 2:15

We grow as we study God's Word and put it into practice daily.  No one enjoys stunted growth, whether it is in plants or in our lives spiritually.  There are remendies for both.  See what we did with our garden when the critters were stunting its growth.

Gardening Post:
Some have asked if I was going to update them on my raised garden beds. Well, yes I am, and it is quite a story. When we showed you our raised garden we had just planted them.

See how we build them here.

A couple of days later, my husband was ready to show the neighbor our raised gardens.
Before he showed them he decided to take a look at them.  What he saw was disheartening.   Five of our tomato plants had the tops removed.  My husband said that the deer had eaten them.

Some one told us, if we would plant some Marigolds around the garden, that they would keep the deer away because the deer didn't like the smell of them.  Someone else told him to put fish line around the garden.  They said the deer would not be able to see it but when they touch it  it would startle them and they would stay away from it.   Let me just say, the marigolds did not work for us, because the deer just reached over  them to eat the tomato plant.

We decided to buy fencing  and put it around it.  We bought 6 - 8ft,  2x4 inch boards for each bed and sawed them off to 6 feet.  We bought a roll of fencing to go around the beds.

We put a 2 x 4 x 6 foot board at each corner of the two beds and one in the middle of each outside bed.

After we got all the posts set, we began stretching and stapling the fencing to the post and the beds.

After the fencing was stretched and stapled all the way around the beds, we cut the fencing and left a space to put a door, to get into the beds yet keeping all the critters out of them.

The door is 2 feet wide by five feet high, the height of the fencing.

The fencing was rolled out on the ground and cut to the size of the door.   Then the fencing was attached to the door frame.   A couple of board, that were 24 inches long, were added to stabilize the door .

After it was made, we attached it to the bed with  door hinges.

We also put two screen door latches on it to make sure it stays closed.

Since putting the fence around it we have not had any problem with critters eating our plants.

The plants are growing well, as you can see in the picture below.

We even have tomatoes and peppers coming on and the squash and beans are blooming.

We are so glad that we made these raised beds.  We have planted and watered and are seeing the growth.   We are looking forward to reaping the harvest.

This is where we are today.  Hope you tried building your own raised gardens and are looking forward to you own harvest.   We go out daily to see how our garden is growing.  Not only do we want to take care of our garden so it continues to grow by our watering and fertilizing it, but we desire to take care of our spiritual growth by studying and applying God's Word to our daily lives.
