Built-In Book Case Makeover

Scripture to Live By:  Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17

I remember 41 years ago when the reality of this verse took place in my own life.  I believed that I was a sinner and in need of the Savior.  I believed what the Bible said about Jesus Christ, that God sent him to earth to pay the penalty for my sin, which is death, (separation from God).   I, by faith in His finished work on Calvary, received Him as my personal Savior and Christ came into my heart that very moment.  I became a new creation.  What I mean by that is God gave me a new nature, a new heart.  God made a change in my soul.  The above verse says  old things are passed away, behold, all things are become new.  Old thought life is changed to new thinking, old principles are changed for new principles.  Old practices are changed to God honoring practices.   The  new man acts from the new principles, the word of God, and for new results with new company.  I am so very thankful for this scripture passage and the meaning it holds for my life.

Home Improvement Post:

We are doing some remodeling in the house we have recently moved into.  We had a built-in bookcase in our hallway that we wanted to update and add more shelving.  We began by removing all the books and seeing what we wanted to do.  We decided to tear the bookshelf all the way out and to start all over.

This is what it looked like when we started the process of tearing it out.

With hammer and crow bar the process began.

We finally got the old bookshelf out, and discovered that it was green wall board behind it.

We began the job of sanding all the frame work, and preparing it to line
the entire book case with bead board to give it a fresh look.

After sanding, we gave it a fresh coat of paint.

After painting all that we needed to paint, it was time to start measuring and cutting the bead board to fit the back of the bookcase and each side.

The back piece was put in first and then each side.  We used a nail gun to attach the bead board. (The nail gun is quicker, and it makes small holes.

After the back and both sides of bead board was attached.
We measured and cut a piece of bead board to fit in the top of the bookcase, as seen below.

We purchased trim to enclose all seams.

This is the finished bookcase.
Then we were ready to add the shelving.

We measured the length and the width of the shelving and decided how much distance we wanted between shelves, according to the size of books we planned to put on each shelf.

We decided we could have 6 shelves, and the floor made the seventh one.

In order to make the holes even through out, my husband made a board with the right distance for each shelve's bracket hole. He placed his board at the top of the bookcase, and drilled the front  and back hole on one side of the bookcase, and turned to the other side and drilled the holes on the other side.  Then he moved the board down to the hole just drilled and used that as his top guide, and continued down the wall unto all the bracket holes were drilled.

We placed the brackets in each hole and added the shelving.

We purchased 8 ft long white laminated shelving board,
and cut it to the length needed for the shelves.

My husband made sure every shelf was level.

My new built-in book shelf is ready to display my most treasured books.

I am so very thankful for it, and all the wonderful books I have, and I'm ready to do some serious studying.

When my daughter and her family were visiting a few weeks back, we boxed up 13 containers of books so we could get all the things out of three rooms of our house to make the house ready for laying new carpeting.  I have emptied two of these containers into this bookcase.  So you see I still have a ways to go.  But I really like my new built-in bookcase, and have my favorite books right at my fingertips.  So if you need to remodel an old bookcase, perhaps seeing what we did will be a help to you.

Blessings,
