DIY Snowman

Scripture to Live By:
Christmas is such a beautiful time of the year with all the decorations and all the displays of lights.
As I look at the beauty I am reminded of the Scriptures that tells of the true light.  Jesus said it himself.

John 8:12   Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”

1 John 1:5-7  This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth;  but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.

Follow the Light of the world that you might not walk in darkness.

Craft Post:

I used scrap wood that I had on hand.  If you do not have scrap wood, here is what you will need:

1 x 10 x 10 white pine board 2 ft long will give you enough wood for the heart base and the brim of the hat.
1 landscape timber.  You need 18 inches for the body and 3 1/2 inches for the hat.  (I use a piece of 4 x 4 for the hat that I had on hand.)
1 piece of  3/8 to 1/2 inch plywood,  you will need at least 5 inches wide by 6 inches long for the two  hands
White paint
Black paint
Orange paint  and a Nose (from Craft store or make your own)
Red Ribbon for bow and to trim the hat.
Greenery and red buds or berries

Draw a heart on a 10 inch wide by 12 inch long board.
Your heart will be just a little smaller than 10 inch wide and will be 11 inches long.

Cut the heart out with a band saw or  jig saw.
My band saw is broken so we used a jig saw. It is easier to cut with a band saw.

Sand the edges smooth using a belt sander.

Using  the 1 x 10 inch wide x 10 inch long pine board draw an 8 inch circle on it.

Cut it out with band saw or jig saw.

After cutting the circle.  Sand the ruff edges off with a belt sander.

Then  it is ready to paint black on both side and the edge,

Cut the 4 inch x 4 inch board 3 1/2 inches long.  Then sand of any ruff burrs.
This is the top of the snowman's hat.

Cut 18 inches off the landscape timber and sand off any ruff burrs.
This is the body of the snowman.

Draw two hands on the 3/8 to 1/2 inch plywood.  They are 2 1/4 inch wide by 5 1/2 inch long.

Cut out with band saw or jig saw.

Sand until smooth with a belt sander.

Paint the hands and body boards white.

Paint the brim, top of the hat and the heart base black.  As seen below.

Then center the heart base on one end of the body board and nail in on.
Center the brim of the hat on the other end and nail it in place.

To nail the top of the hat to the brim.  Trim the head of a finish off so that the nail can go into the brim as well as the top of the hat.  As seen below.

Measure to make sure the top is centered on the brim.

Nail the hat top on the brim.

Now your snowman is ready to put the hands on.

The hands are placed 7 1/2 inches from the bottom of the snowman's body.

Nail on with a nailer or hammer and nail.

You can purchase a nose for the snowman at a craft store or you can make your own using a broom handle.
Cut 2 inches off.

Then sand off the ruff edges then put a nail in the end and then sand the head off the nail and to a point
so you can nail it to the body of the snowman.

Paint orange.

Drill a hole 3 1/2 inch down from the top of the body.
Nail the nose on to the body.

Paint the eyes and the mouth on to the body.  Start the top of the eye 1 3/4 inch from the top of the body.

Put the red ribbon around the base of the top of the hat. Staple in place.

Make a red bow to go just above the hands. Go here to see how to make a bow.

Put greenery in the hands of the snowman with a few red buds or berries.

Add bow to the side just above the hands.

Now you are ready to display it indoors or out.
My little guy is sitting on the hearth of my fire place.
In front of a little 4 foot tree.

Or outside as you enter our home.

These little snowmen make a great gift for others or an added festive look to your own decor.  We think he is so cute.  Those who have seen him really like him.  It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas at our house.
