Table Makeover

Scripture to Live By:
How can a young man keep his way pure?   By guarding it according to your word.
10 With my whole heart I seek you;  let me not wander from your commandments!
11 I have stored up your word in my heart,  that I might not sin against you.
12 Blessed are you, O Lord teach me your statutes!
13 With my lips I declare all the rules[c] of your mouth.
14 In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches.
15 I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways.
16 I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.

Psalms 119:9-16

Home Decor:
I have had this coffee table for at least 46 years and it is still real sturdy and doesn't look that bad.  I am always looking for ways to find more storage space.  I see a lot of people using baskets to store things in.  In my sun-room I have a lot of clutter and I needed something to hide it out of sight.  I have books and magazines, quilting and crochet items that I work on and leaving them lay out makes my room look cluttered.  So I thought if I added a bottom to my coffee table that would give me a shelf to put 3 baskets on and I could store my books and magazines that I am reading, my crotchet that I am working on and my quilting block material.  I went to several stores looking for baskets that would go with the table. Most of them were selling for around $20.00 each or more.  I went to Jo-Ann Fabric and they had their baskets on sale for 50% off.  I got  baskets for $10.00 each.  I was thrilled.

We looked at shelving boards that were 6 ft long but they would need to be split lengthwise to get the needed width I would need since they were 12 inches wide and that would make them too wide.  I needed 19 1/2 wide and 53 inches long.  They would also need to be cut length wise and that would mean loosing one of the finished edges.

So we bought three shelving boards that are 3 foot long by 9.8 inches wide. When we put two of them together we had the needed width,  which came to just over 19 1/2 inches wide just over what I need  to make the shelf under my table. The boards were only 36 inch long and we needed at least 53 inch long.  By splitting the third board in half  would give me the needed length.
Here is how we made it:

We purchased 3 boards and 4 casters to do our makeover on our coffee table and used some scrap shelving pieces from other projects.

We laid out  2 boards side by side meeting in the middle leaving the space where the third board pieces would go.  This would make the shelf stronger by putting it together this way.

Next we laid out the third board to cut it in half.  Using each half to add to the boards above.

Saw the board  in half using a table saw with a thin blade.
The thinner the blade the less board length will be used.

Lay boards together with sawed edges on the inside so you don't see the cut edges.

I had 2 pieces of shelving board 12 inches wide by 16 inches long to attach the 4 boards together making it look like one board. These board went on the back side of the shelf.

I laid out a hole pattern so each of the boards would be attached to 3 of the top boards.
(16 holes for each side and this made the shelf real sturdy.)

Drill and counter sink  the screw holes.

Clamp boards together and transfer screw holes with a small drill making sure not to drill threw the top boards. Put screws in as you go along making sure they are not too long and go threw the top boards.

Now the bottom is finished except for the casters. (This is the underneath side - this could be painted brown but since it will not be seen I just left it.  Maybe latter I will go back and paint it brown.)

This is the finish top side and it really looks nice.

Below is the coffee table where we are attaching the shelf .

Before attaching the shelf to the table remove the skid buttons from of the bottom of the table legs.

Next lay out where legs are going sit on new shelf.

It is hard to see but we traced each leg where it would sit on the shelf.

Drill holes in center of layout to mount shelf to legs

Turn table upside down and lay shelf on legs and position in place.

Counter sink holes.

Screw shelf to legs.

Next, position casters on bottom of shelf.

Transfer holes from casters to bottom of shelf. Drill and screw casters to bottom of shelf.

Job done, now turn table over and put baskets in place.

I really like the way it looks and all the added space it provides.  I read, crochet, work on quilt blocks and relax in this room.  But I like things to look tidy when they are not in use, so these baskets will help me keep this sun room organized better.  Hope you like it.
